Heart-Brain

A little over a year ago, while serving a mission in Peru, I was invited to speak to a group of young women in my church.  The theme was based on the heart and I did some researching and found this article.  It is a little long and not all of it related to what I wanted to share with the young women but I became intrigued with what I had learned about the heart-brain.  I share this one paragraph from the HearthMath Institute and a link to their site if you would like to learn more about their research.  “Most of us have been taught in school that the heart is constantly responding to “orders” sent by the brain in the form of neural signals. However, it is not as commonly known that the heart actually sends more signals to the brain than the brain sends to the heart! Moreover, these heart signals have a significant effect on brain function—influencing emotional processing as well as higher cognitive faculties such as attention, perception, memory, and problem-solving. In other words, not only does the heart respond to the brain, but the brain continuously responds to the heart.”
This summer, when my daughter-in-law introduced me to a learning system, “The Well Educated Heart”, I knew I had to learn more and share more about how the heart impacts our lives in ways we may not have imagined before.   I am taking the free on-line class intended for mothers, (but I think grandmothers count too :-)) and it is opening my heart to learning in a whole and more complete way.

"To put the world right in order, we must first put the nation in order.
To put the nation in order, we must first put the family in order.
To put the family in order, we must first cultivate our personal life;
We must first set our hearts right."
--Confucius

I have been thinking of two scriptures that confirm in my mind about the Heart/Brain.  The first is found in Proverbs 23:7 – For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:  and D&C 8:2 – I will tell you in your mind and in your heart by the Holy Ghost.

  1. These are great thoughts to share! A thought that came to my mind is that our heart is our foundation. I love that quote you shared because that really verified that. everything that we take part in in life comes from having a solid foundation, or our heart in the right place as the quote was saying. And when you really think about it, what is the heart? I wonder if it is our spirit? Because in that case, it makes so much sense that our spirit would be designed to have dominance over our mind. Really, really cool stuff! You have a beautiful heart and I'm excited to learn from you!

  2. Tiffany, I learn from you all the time and am so grateful for you. I love your comments. What is our heart? How is it tied to our spirit? Is that where our spirit dwells within us? Here is what I found from a talk give at BYU by Russel T. Osguthorpe:The scriptures teach us that, like the soul, the heart encompasses both the body and the spirit (see Alma 32:28)—the heart is the very center of our being. We “rejoice” with our heart (D&C 97:21); we “ponder” with our heart (see Luke 2:19); we “understand” with our heart (John 12:40). It is our heart that is “humble” (see Alma 42:30); it is with our heart that we “discern” (l Kings 3:9) and are “edified” (see D&C 50:23); and it is with our heart that we experience “reverence” (see 1 Peter 3:15), “inspiration” (see Alma 43:48), and “joy” (2 Nephi 1:21). Yet these are not the terms we typically use to describe the ways most of us teach and learn. If anything, we reserve them for the learning that takes place within the walls of our churches and temples, but not within the walls of our classrooms and homes."
    Wow!!! I love this - no pun intended. :-)
